WHO WE ARE

The Monte Bianco Chorus came into being on 15 October 1957. Its founder, Silvano Pittaluga, had combed all the alpine associations of the city in order to form a group able to perform the popular alpine songs in the manner of the famous S.A.T. Chorus.

Such an initiative could be considered surprising, as the Genoese are known above all as seamen, but Liguria is a special region, where mountain and sea meet inseparably.
In this enviroment the newly-founded chorus soon found a public that wanted to relive, on the shores of the sea, the magic atmosphere of the mountain. After ten years of public success, Maestro Pittaluga decided to leave the direction of the chorus to the young and valid Mauro Balma, but remained in the Chorus as vice-Maestro and baritone.
Balma brought to the "Monte Bianco" a new strong personality, thanks to his brilliant harmonisations, but a few years later he left the Chorus in order to assume the role of teacher at the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory in Genoa.

In the early 70's, Maestro Lorenzo Cambiaso, previously conductor of the Mongioie Chorus, took over the direction of the "Monte Bianco", bringing to its repertory many new and highly appreciated harmonisations. Though being a passionate mountaineer and rock climber, Renzo loved all kinds of popular chants, the “sea” as well as the “religious” ones. This largely contributed to the “Monte Bianco” Choir's repertory, which became richer and more diversified, focused on four main topics: the mountain, the Alpino soldiers, the sea, the religious feelings.

Such an ensemble of topics was appreciated by the audience, who could rediscover ancient, almost forgotten traditions from every Italian Region. Indeed, great emotions arose when – going beyond the difficulties concerning the several dialects and languages from the various ethnic groups – real “lessons of life” came back to the light, coming to us through many generations.

After 43, really intensive years, Renzo and the “Monte Bianco” Choir took different roads, which made it necessary to find a new “helmsman”! The formerly deputy-master and second tenor Stefano Alloisio came into play.

Under Stefano's leadership, the “Monte Bianco” Choir are back to their traditional route: the same one taking the Choir to collect those scraps of “hidden” culture, coming from common people... a culture that deserves to be preserved with the same humility.
